green day 2017
prep 1 & 7
We made our very own Sullivan Bug Hotel beside After School Club. We carefully piled up old bricks and wooden pallets and then filled the gaps with leaves, twigs, flowers and grass from our school garden. Using card and double-sided tape we also made pretty nature pictures in our school garden.
Prep 2 took part in a bug hunt in the lower school garden. They searched through leaves, plants, under logs and inside tree trunks. Using special bug microscopes they were able to see just how amazing these tiny inhabitants of our school garden really are.
Prep 2 also planted tomato seeds- we prepared the soil in pots, added the seeds, watered them just a little and then set them on the windowsills to receive light and heat to help them to grow.
Prep 4 made hedgehog houses for our school garden They gathered sticks, twigs and other leaf litter and filled cardboard boxes with all the natural materials they found in the school grounds. They tucked the new hedgehog homes away safely under bushes and trees to provide new shelter for our outdoor school friends.
Prep 4 always enjoy time with Karen from RSPB. Karen helps us to take part in the Big Schools' Bird Watch throughout the year as she can hear and bird call and easily identify which of our feathered friends it is.
Prep 6 investigated colour in the outdoor classroom. They gathered natural materials in a range of colours and created leaf pictures with what they had found.
Prep 5 spent Green Day in our school garden planting fruit and vegetable seeds. Thanks to Heinz who provided tomato seeds and pots for us to plant tomato seeds. They also planted Wonky Veg seeds and we are looking forward to seeing just how unusual these foods will be!
Prep 3 wanted to provide food for the birds in the garden so they made bird feeders out of pine cones, margarine and bird seed. They also made hanging feeders out of twisted wire, cheese and apples.
