A FAMILY SCHOOL
We have one class in each year group and we like to know all of our pupils so that everyone feels a part of the school. There is a strong sense of family history in the school with many past Prep and/or Senior School pupils returning with their young families.
The spirit of Robert Sullivan, born in Holywood in 1800 and whose estate provided the money for the establishment of Sullivan Upper School in 1877, is honoured in his desire to “bestow the blessings of education on all succeeding generations in his native place”.
The school motto is in the Irish language and means “the gentle hand foremost”; a constant reminder about the virtue of gentleness in dealing with others.
There are three Houses in the Prep: McAlester, Praeger and Speers. Each child joins a House and we have competitions and assemblies where Preps 1-7 gather to discuss common themes together. House points are allocated for competitions and for exceptional acts so that all are able to participate.
